Diesel generators can vary depending upon their construction whether it is a DC generator or AC generator, the working principle and what kind of prime mover is used to provide mechanical energy to the generator needed to produce the required electrical energy.

DC and AC diesel generators:

A DC or direct current generator is a device which converts mechanical energy into direct current through the principle of electromagnetic induction. The first kinds of DC generators were Dynamos. They have become infamous over the years because of wide use of AC generators.

AC generators, on the other hand produce AC power when they are given mechanical energy as input. They can further be divided into 2 categories:

  • Synchronous generators which rotates at a synchronous speed.
  • Induction generators which rotate at a non synchronous speed.

Depending on source of mechanical energy:

As the name diesel generator clearly depicts that the main source of energy in the generator is its fuel which is diesel. The generator is coupled with a diesel engine which then provides the generator required amount of mechanical energy. The engine is made to run through diesel. So, both the units that i.e. engine and the generating unit combined forms a diesel generator sets or a DG set in short we can say.

Applications of diesel generators:

With the increasing demand of electricity the need of a reliable source of energy is increasing day by day. The diesel generators have proven to be the most reliable source of electricity, be it industrial application or domestic. Following are some crucial applications:
